Review and Activity: Duck in the Truck

Duck in the Truck (Hardcover), by Jez Alborough.  We finally had a chance to read the classic "Duck in the Truck."  It was a joy to read aloud, and a whole lot of fun.  The duck in a truck gets stuck in a pile of mud, and a parade of barnyard animals assist him to get moving again.

Excerpt:
"This is a sheep driving home in a jeep.  'Get out of the way,' he yells with a beep.'  / This is the quack of an angry Duck.  'I can't,' he snaps, 'my truck is stuck.'"
Bookworm's interest at 2 years, 1 month: I'm pretty sure we picked this up in the library when he was younger, and he was surprisingly not interested.  I recently brought a copy home with us, and we read it once, but since, he refuses to let me read it to him.  Yesterday, he actually said, "No, boring!"  I'm not sure that he knows what "boring" means, so I wouldn't take that to heart.  And really, the book is anything but boring!  What can I say?

Activity: Cardboard box car!

We used one of our Christmas gift boxes to make a fun car.  We covered the box with a blue fabric bag (the one that Amazon.com ships oversized items in), with some strategically placed staples.  After this photo was taken, we added some paper plate wheels.  It was fun until it started to fall apart (I need a better stapler).  It did, however, inspire a more ambitious project, which may just find its way onto the blog in the next few weeks as a guest post by Daddy!

Question:
How have you been using your post-Christmas paper/boxes?  I admit to having cleared most of it out by now, so that we could walk around, but I have a few more boxes saved up for a rainy day project (and some wrapping paper tubes - see them in the photo?  Not sure what we'll do with those but they seemed potentially useful).

Have you tried using the tubes with small rubber balls to make a toddler friendly marble run? Use the boxes to help prop up the tubes.

Lol
Love his response to the book. Too funny.

We didn't have any big boxes. :(

We do have some wrapping paper tubes put aside, but my kids are more likely to swordfight with them than anything else....

I love sheep in a jeep, but haven't read this one. How funny that he is already declaring things "boring" - he must have heard someone use that word sometime recently...

Your car looks very cute, and I hope we do get to see a guest post by Daddy in the near future!

Maybe Bookworm starts to develop the same sense for meanings for the words that Anna has. Anything featuring angry characters that snap will surely not be popular with her. But the box car is really neat. We didn't have any big boxes in, so we didn't really add to our containers collection this year.

Awesome! :) I like that yours has a steering wheel. Ours was missing that key element. So, hot glue is not the best, and it seems a stapler isn't either... :) I guess these homemade cars are just destined to fall apart quickly! Good thing our kids don't care!

we didn't really have lots of great boxes to keep around this year.
But, those are all great book picks.

What a cute box-car!!

Those tubes make great tunnel ramps for tiny cars and marbles... you can race them!

You can also make great creative movement streamers with them by decorating them with paint or covering with stickers or paper, punching holes around the ends and tying on long lengths of colourful ribbbon. I usually do this with paper towel tubes which are much shorter, so you may want to cut the tubes in half.

My pre-k students love Duck in a Truck. They like the moral lesson from it and they like that it is an easy book to remember and they can "read" it themselves later.

I love the idea for the car using Christmas boxes! So inventive!
