Cut pieces of paper into circles about the size of the bottom of your salad spinner (you will probably end up wanting many of them, because this is so fun!). Place a small piece of double sided tape (or roll up a regular piece like I did) on the back of one of the circles, and stick it into your salad spinner. Squirt paint on top. We used Prang metallic paints
Open the lid, and reveal your masterpieces! We made quite a few.
But I wasn't sure what to do with them. I decided after staring at them for awhile that they would make a fun snake. Once they had dried, I put them into his "arts and crafts" learning box, along with a googley eye, cut out tongue, glue stick, Elmer's glue, and mini stapler (so he could choose how he wanted to join everything). Of course he wanted the stapler, since it is a semi-forbidden tool. So I helped him to staple it all together.
He dubbed the finished snaked "Skookie." Then he insisted that Skookie the Snake play our new Alphabet Bingo game, and that Daddy and the Bibliophile show Skookie how to play. What a sweet Daddy, obliging:
Apparently Skookie holds his cards with his tongue:

Comment: Have you done salad spinner art too? Do your kids love it as much as mine did? What other artsy fun have you been up to lately? (I intended to include links to where I have seen salad spinner painting craft recently, but I can't remember where, and searching my google reader for salad spinner brings up a ton of posts - so, feel free to link up in the comments if you want to share your project!).

Believe it or not, we have NEVER done salad spinner art. I should definitely try it with my kids; I'm sure they would love it.
That snake is cute, and I love the way your son immediately integrated him into the family.
And of course, he would want to use the stapler. So would my kids ;)
IB certainly connected to his art - I love it when art creations also double as toys and playmates. We have never made salad spinner art, because we don't have a salad spinner.
Oh my, you fun and clever lady!!! Love this spinning craft! And the snake is brilliant too.
Lovely. Lovely!
Thank you very much for linking up to Kids Get Crafty. Much appreciated!

i LOVE his salad spinner snake! we love doing salad spinner art.
thanks for linking up!
I've never heard salad spinner art before, so thanks for the primer at the beginning. Looks like the Bibliophile really enjoyed himself! And I love that Skookie (great name) was able to learn to play Alphabet Bingo. What a clever snake!
Another item to add to my dollar store list: cheap salad spinner.
We have that same Oxo salad spinner but I use it a lot for making our salads, and I'm not sure I want to put paint in it. How is cleanup? Do you have a separate spinner for crafts? Lots of little crevices and such. Your snake is adorable.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hadn't tried it yet! It was really fun. I used washable paints, and they actually cleaned off the salad spinner very easily (even if I, ahem, delayed washing it for a couple of days). I just soaked it in some soapy water, then gave it a quick handwash (all the paint came right off at that step), then ran it through the dishwasher for good measure.
We HAVEN'T done this one yet either, but I'm not sure if I can take the risk of my salad spinner getting covered in paint! Oh, well, I guess I can because the results are just so pretty :)
I haven't yet done spinner art - we don't own a spinner and although getting one (primarily for art!!) is still on my list of things to do, I haven't yet managed to actually try it. Maybe this will be the inspiration I need as I really love the snake!
Thank you for joining us at A Crafty Soiree again! You're not the last person, I think I am! I've never had an old salad spinner to use, but now ours is finally on it's last legs so we might be doing this soon too.
