Weekly Wrap-Up

No learning boxes again this week.  I'm mostly OK with that.  We had our reasons. :)  Here are some of the fun things that have kept us occupied.

The Foot Book (The Bright and Early Books for Beginning Beginners)Weekly Alphabet Craft Play Date (F).
Today, we hosted a play date around the letter F.  We ate french fries, fresh fruit, fruit snacks, and fruit juice.  While we were waiting for our friends, we played frisbee.  We read the Foot Book.  And we did two crafts --

First, we made a flower frame craft (with a frog thrown in for good measure).  (Supplies used: craft stick, foam flower template, scissors to cut frame hole ahead of time, frog stickers and glitter glue for embellishment, scotch tape to attach stick to flower, optional photo - otherwise, it's more of a peek-a-boo toy).

And then I let the kids play with some packages of fire fighter themed stickers.  The Bibliophile has been into telling stories with the stickers lately, so I taped pieces of freezer paper to paper plates, and labeled them story scenes.  That way, the stickers are repositionable.  We keep telling the same story over and over again -- "Once upon a time there was a fire.  It started out red, then went orange, and then yellow.  Someone called the fire engine, and the fire fighters came.  They attached a hose to the fire hydrant, and sprayed the fire.  Then the fire went away."  If you have a better idea, we're all ears. :)

My Busy Book: Ages 4-5: Brain-Building Activities to Give Your Preschooler a Head Start! At night, we've actually been sometimes replacing our sacred bedtime book time with this wipe off My Busy Book (it is not new to us, but recently resurfaced) and adult word search books.  I have occasionally printed beginner word searches for him, but mostly the Bibliophile enjoys snuggling up next to me with a grown-up word puzzle and drawing the lines connecting the letters after I point out where the word is.  I figure it is good fine motor control work.  (And of course good snuggle time).

Cathedral ClassicGames.  He continues to play a lot of board games.  Cathedral, in particular, has seen a lot of play this week.

We've read the True Books geography books that we got from the library book sale a few times.  We have focused a bit on Cuba this week.  We read Cuba (True Books), and reiterated a few of the facts we learned -- that it is near Florida, does not have many cars (the ones there are old), that people get around by bicycle and free bus, that the language spoken is Spanish, and that music is very popular there, including dances like the cha cha cha and rumba.  (We'll save Castro for a later date!).  I found a few cute related craft ideas, but he hasn't been all that into crafts lately, so I haven't forced them.

A new Target opened up near us this week, so a visit to the dollar section has inspired me a bit to fill the boxes again next week.  We'll see how it plays out.

I am a bit amused - that's how our boxes went when I tried them out. A lot of enthusiasm... for the first couple of weeks. I am impressed that IB is interested in word searches - daughter is not really into this kind of puzzles. Cathedral looks like a fun game. I am hoping to expand our game collection after this birthday :)

We had the same experience with the boxes.

I like the flower frame craft.

He's still really enthused about the boxes; I just have been in baby preparation mode, so we've been out running errands every day and too distracted by other things to prepare well on the weekends/nights.

Your letter F play date sounds fun, and I especially like the idea of playing with stickers on wax paper!

I've never seen Cathedral before, but it looks like SO much fun!! I'm going to add it to the girls' wish list for Christmas!

We spent lots of time outside enjoying nature hikes this week. It was so beautiful!

We had a very light week too. So many errands and things that we never got to our tot trays. Fourth grade had to come first. She didn't seem to mind though and still had fun.

At least your play date was educational. =o) Love the flower craft.

Do you really REALLY like your Busy Book? I'm looking for something like that for ER.
