Little Scholastic Board Book Review and Give-Away: Zoo and Numbers

Today we have reviews and a give-away of two fantastic little board books for the youngest readers.  The Bibliophile enjoyed testing them out with me, and we're looking forward to sharing them with his baby sister.

Zoo (Little Scholastic)


An adorable board book, Zoo contains an impressive number of features designed to appeal to infant readers - bright, clear images of five lovable animals; fuzzy, soft-to-the-touch tactile elements on every page; slide out "flash card" sort of inserts (which feature colors to be matched up to the animals); AND a 4-piece puzzle that can be put together by placing the flashcards together.  Wow!  I was instantly impressed, as was my near-3 year old.  My only criticism is that the slide in flashcards are too difficult for my little guy (almost 3 years old) to get into the slots, and the book is labeled for 1-3 year olds.  I would always read books aimed at this age level together with the child anyway, and the Bibliophile didn't seem very bothered by the difficulty of manipulating the slots.

Numbers (Little Scholastic)
Numbers is a sweet and simple counting book, labeled for ages "baby to 2."  It contains five two-page spreads which feature "touch and feel" animals: a soft caterpillar, bumpy frogs, fluffy sheep, furry cats, and sparkly fish.  Kids learn to count from 1-5, and of course enjoy the tactile experience.  A perfect baby book.
