Science Sunday: Planet Earth

Planet Earth: The Complete BBC SeriesI decided I will try to post short blurbs for awhile, rather than no posts at all.  So, today's Science Sunday post is just a quick update to say how much we are LOVING our Planet Earth DVD series that Daddy gifted us with.  Every day I ask the Bibliophile if he wants some "Planet Earth time," and he picks one of the 6 discs to watch.  We don't watch them in order, and we don't finish any segments (he's only 3), but he is picking up pieces of info here and there, and enjoys watching the animals.  I elaborate as we watch, of course, because otherwise most of it would go over his head.  And I keep alert to skip to another chapter when an animal decides to dine on another.  Has anyone seen the other BBC series like this?  Life and Blue Planet?  I'm wondering if we should check them out or if they'd be inappropriate for his age.

By the way, the only videos he will watch at the moment are Planet Earth, some DVDs about learning Spanish, and our saved YouTube favorites now and then.  He used to love the Disney Cars movie (and still loves the toys and games) and to watch clips of a few other shows online, but at some point, videos became evil.  I'd like to say that the extra time gets put into reading, learning activities, and pretend play, but the truth is that it just translates into more computer games.

Daddy also found a companion reader to the Planet Earth series:

Animals of Africa (Planet Earth Growing Readers, Level 3)
Right now the text is a little advanced for him, but the animal images are still appealing.

I have a few science-related "experiments" in mind for the coming year.  No promises we'll get to them, but I'll try to report in when we do.  But for now, "Planet Earth time" is more my speed.

We have Planet Earth too and love it. We do the same and watch different pieces here and there. Daughter has no problems with "circle of life" and usually roots for predators. She is very disappointed when the prey gets away.

We need to get around to watching those. After watching Disney's Oceans, I've been turned off from the nature shows - it was pretty, but with very little science.

I don't know. I've had very mixed results with shows like that. We got IMax whale and dolphin tickets as part of our visit to an aquarium and had horrid results with the kids. They were freaked out by the size of the creatures and the science was mixed in with a lot of theory and politics which turned me off of it.

But, I've heard good things about the series as a whole, but haven't had a chance to check it out. Have you checked reviews on Amazon?

I think the above comment about the rooting for the predators is funny.

I will admit that I am a grownup and I don't like watching the parts with the animals dining on the others. But when I told my daughter recently that polar bears eat seals, she immediately put the bear to the seal and said "num num num"...no big deal. Bu
